How to Rent a Car in China: A Complete Road Trip Guide

Recently, a friend of mine asked for my help in renting a car for his road trip in western Sichuan. I believe it's gonna be an incredible adventure.

While many car rental basics are similar worldwide and this isn't his first time renting a car, there are some unique challenges he might face when renting a car and planning a road trip in China.

• Apple Maps is Your Friend: Apple Maps provides excellent English navigation in China (no offline maps tho).
• Data Roaming: Ensure your phone has reliable international data roaming.
• Offline Maps is a Must: Learn how to use offline maps from Amap (which now supports English) or Baidu Maps as a precaution. Connectivity in areas like Western Sichuan can be unreliable.
• Road Signs or Speed Limits: Just follow the instructions from the navigation and you'll be fine.

2. Driving Culture in China: Be Patient and Observant

• Honking: Honking is more frequent in China. It's often used to alert other drivers, but avoid excessive honking.
• Sudden Lane Changes: Be prepared for sudden lane changes and merging.
• Overtaking: Overtaking can be aggressive. Be cautious and defensive.
• Right-of-Way: Understand the nuances of right-of-way. It can be a bit of a free-for-all sometimes.

3. Road Conditions: Prepare for the Unexpected

• Mountainous Roads: Expect winding roads, steep inclines, and potentially challenging driving conditions.
• Road Quality: Varies significantly. Be prepared for uneven surfaces and potential road closures.

4. Toll Roads: ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) is Your Friend

• If possible, rent a car with an ETC device. It makes toll payments much faster and smoother. Or else, get wechat/alipay prepared beforehand. No cash required.

5. Language Barriers

• English Proficiency: Limited outside major cities. Learn basic Mandarin phrases for emergencies or use a reliable translation app.

6. Car Rental Essentials

• International Driving Permit (IDP): A must-have.
• Insurance: Carefully review the insurance options offered by the rental company and choose the coverage that best suits your needs.
• Documents: Keep your driver's license, passport, IDP, rental agreement, and insurance documents with you at all times.

7. Emergency Preparedness

• Roadside Assistance: Obtain contact information for your rental company's roadside assistance.
• Emergency Numbers: Save emergency numbers (police - 110, ambulance - 120, traffic accident - 122) in your phone.
  • You can make emergency calls even without cellular data in China.
• Communication Plan: Inform someone of your itinerary and expected arrival times.

8. The Infrastructure: Rest Assured

• Extensive Highway Network: China boasts a modern and extensive highway network, making long-distance travel relatively smooth.
• Abundant Service Areas: You can expect frequent and well-equipped service areas along major highways. These typically offer fuel stations, restrooms, restaurants, convenience stores, and even some accommodation options.
